Berkshire Hathaway accelerates buybacks; operating profit falls

Business & markets1 min read

Berkshire Hathaway has increased its stock buybacks significantly while reporting a decline in operating profit for the third quarter of 2026. The company attributed the profit drop to weaker insurance underwriting.

What was reported

Berkshire's third-quarter operating profit fell 6% to $12.71 billion from $13.49 billion year-over-year.

The firm repurchased $9.6 billion of its stock in the third quarter, following $4.8 billion earlier in 2026.

Net profit decreased by 28% to $22.11 billion, impacted by unrealized gains and losses on securities.

Why it matters

Buybacks are when companies repurchase their own shares, often seen as a way to return value to shareholders. A decline in operating profit suggests challenges in core business operations, which can affect investor sentiment.
